AUTHOR INTERVIEW - ALEXIA PURDY

What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?

My name is Alexia Purdy, I was born in Mexico but grew up in the USA and I live in Las Vegas right now.

Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
I always wanted to be a writer, since I can remember. I also wanted to be a nurse, a dancer, an actress and a singer. Go figure.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?
Ever Shade (A Dark Faerie tale)- Shade discovers she’s part faery, goes on a journey, discovers danger and magic within her and all around her.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
It can take anywhere from a month to 6 months to complete a book. Lately it’s the
 latter.

Which of your books were easier/harder to write than the others?
Actually, Ever Shade was extremely hard to write, it was my first full length novel and I hate typing so it was a challenge to make myself sit still and type until I reached the end. I am a bit hyper. My second book Ever Fire was much easier to write, it flowed well, I was more used to longer periods of typing, and I was eager to get the story out of my head.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
I’m working on a new series, the first is called Reign of Blood. It is a new genre for me, more of Horror/thriller/action than the fantasy I’m used to. Though it does incorporate urban fantasy into it. It’s definitely been a challenge.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?
Urban Fantasy has always been a favourite of mine since I can remember. I did enjoy reading a series called ‘The Secret of the Unicorn Queen’ when I was younger, it was amazing. It stuck with me until even now, the fantastical worlds building and adventure. I wanted to write like that.

Do you have a favorite character from your books and why are they your favourite?
My favorite character in my Dark Faerie Tale series is Soap (Rylan). He is witty, funny and just mysterious enough to make you wonder what he is up to. He is also charming and handsome.

Where do you get your book plot ideas from? What/Who is your inspiration?
I get all my ideas for stories from dreams. I have vivid crazy dreams I know.

Do you have anybody read your books and give you reviews before you officially release them? ie. Your partner, children, friends, reviewers you know?
None of my family has read my books, I do have some great friends that I have met online that help me proof read, beta read and give reviews for me prior to releasing a book. It helps immensely.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?
Yes I read all the reviews of my books, I can’t help it, it’s too tempting to not look, even if I’m severely disappointed. I’m sure I’ll look at them when I publish my hundredth book too.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?
I usually choose a title by the time I get an idea on paper. It claims the story and it usually fits by the end of the story.

What do you do to unwind and relax? Do you have a hobby?
I read a lot. I also listen to music and draw. I love all things artistic. Watching movies is relaxing too.

Is there a certain Author that influenced you in writing?
Cassandra Clare is my ultimate influence. Love her stories.

Which format of book do you prefer, ebook, hardback, or paperback?
I prefer ebook right now.

What is your favourite book and Why?  Have you read it more than once?
Gone with the Wind, I have read it three times because the language is endearing and the story is epic. Love Scarlet as a character, she’s strong and unforgiving.

What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it?(ebook, hardback or paperback)
I am currently reading Mark of the Seer by Jenna Kay-I have both ebook and paperback, Hell’s Gate by Benjamin Daniels in ebook, The Darkgifts: Birthright by Willow Cross in ebook. I read multiple books at once.

Do you think ebooks will ever totally replace printed books?
No, printed books will always be around.

Did you read a lot at school and write lots of stories or is being a writer something newer in your life?
I read a lot during school. All the time. I wrote lots of short stories and poems. Novel writing is newer to me but I have always delved into writing.

Do you have a favourite genre of book?
My favourite varies, right now it is urban fantasy/paranormal

Is there a book you know you will never read?
Moby Dick, just not interested in it.

Are there any New Authors you are interested in for us to watch out for? and Why should we watch out for them?
I have gotten to read and write with these authors, whom I met through my publisher. They are amazing, highly imaginative and their storytelling abilities blow me away. Check them out: Linna Drehmel, Madison Daniel, Kyani Swanigan and Jenna Kay.
(I have hosted some of these authors on my blog already and will hopefully be reading some of their books soon too.)

What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?
Write every day, even if it’s a sentence. Do try to read a lot too, how else would you know what is popular and research different writing styles?

Where can readers follow you?
