AUTHOR INTERVIEW - RENEE PAWLISH

  1. What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
Renee Pawlish. I was born in California but have lived most of my life in Colorado
    .
  2. What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
This Doesn't Happen In The Movies. What happens when a novice private eye solves crime akin to his cinematic hero, Humphrey Bogart?

  3. Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
Yes, this is part of a series. A new book will be out in October. A short story with Reed Ferguson will be available in the next couple of week.

  4. How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?
I have been writing since I was a kid. I've always enjoyed telling stories, whether it was in my head (those that no one has ever heard of), and those that I shared with others.

  5. Do you gift books to readers to do reviews?
Yes, I gift books. The way I see it, the reviewer is doing me a favor, the least I can do is provide a free book.

  6. How do you come up with the Title and Cover Designs for your book/books?Who designed the Cover of your books?
Titles - that's a tough question. Sometimes they come to me easily, but more often than not, I struggle with what to name my books. As for covers, I usually have something in mind that I describe to the artist. For Nephilim Genesis of Evil, I used Rob Kilgore. For This Doesn't Happen In The Movies, I used Graphicz X Designs. For the upcoming short story collection (Take Five), I used Lindsay Breen Covers.

  7. Have you ever based characters on people you know or based events on things that have happened to you?
Yes, certain people I knew end up in my characters, and events are in the books, but if I told you specifics, I'd have to kill you.

  8. Is there a certain Author that influenced you in writing?
I love the early works of Michael Connelly, and Dennis Lehane. I'm not a huge Stephen King fan, but 'Salem's Lot influenced writing Nephilim.

  9. Which format of book do you prefer, ebook, hardback, or paperback?
I have to go with hardbacks, even though I'm publishing in ebooks (for the moment). I'm a huge first edition collector and I still love holding a book in my hands.

  10. What is your favourite book and Why?  Have you read it more than once?
The Godfather. I just love the way the story unfolds, the history, and how it ended. I've read it twice.

  11. Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favourite/worst  book to movie transfer?
I think it depends on the book and movie, but most of the time, no, I think the movies are not as good as the books. I think The Godfather Part I and II transferred well. Gone With The Wind is another, although huge chunks of the book didn't make it into the movie.

  12. What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it?(ebook, hardback or paperback)
The Concert Killer by RJ McDonnell. It's an ebook by a new indie author. It's good, keeping me turning pages. I'm hard to please, though, because I tend to figure things out or question what the author is doing. I think that's the downside of being an author myself.

  13. Is there a book you know you will never read? Or one you tried to read but just couldn't finish?
I don't like Oprah books, they are too depressing. And the book Reading Lolita In Tehran, didn't finish, which I never do. I always finish a book, or at least scan it to find out how it ends, but I just could not get through that book.

  14. Are there any New Authors you are interested in for us to watch out for? and Why should we watch out for them?
Bert Carson - he writes really well about Vietnam in a way that captures that war. Also Bruce DeSilva (Rogue Island). I thought that was a good book.

  15. Is there anything in your book/books you would change now if you could and what would it be?
Oh, the typos. They creep in no matter how hard you try to find them all. As for story, I learned a while ago to let go of second-guessing or I'd drive myself nuts. Once it's out, it is what it is.

  16. What do you think about book trailers?
I like them, although some I've seen are too long. But if they are done well, they make me curious to check out the book. It's on my list to create them for my books.

  17. What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?
Go to some writers' conferences, and spend some money on your craft. Get your books edited, and learn how to market yourself.

  18. Do you or would you ever use a pen name?
No pen name, I like that my name is a bit unusual and I don't see the need to have a pen name.
